The new building has been described as an architectural gem. Designed by the creators of the London Eye, Marks Barfield Architects, and featuring stunning materials and spaces, The Lightbox is intended to appeal to young and old alike.
For superb gallery building acoustics, the designers have incorporated a state-of-the-art sound absorbing material called Sonacoustic to the ceilings in some of the galleries.
It was very important to the designers to have superb gallery acoustics in the galleries with hard wooden floors, and furnishings. When large groups, including school groups gather, the noise would reverberate off every hard surface. They also required gallery acoustics that would not look out of place and detract from the exhibits, so acoustic panels on the walls could never have been suitable.
Experts in gallery acoustics and general acoustic problems, Oscar Acoustics were specified to install Sonacoustic to the main gallery and Local Life exhibition hall ceilings.
Sonacoustic Elite applied to the gallery ceilings ensured a comfortable acoustic ambience with no indication that it was anything other than smooth white plaster, thus not compromising the clean crisp design concept.
