List of UK installations

Noise Reduction Insulation

  • Spray applied seamless one coat acoustic decorative finish
  • Easily applied to flat or curved surfaces.
  • Reverberation noise reduction
  • Rain on roof noise reduction
  • Thermal noise reduction insulation and condensation control.
  • K-13 typically provides these features at lower installed prices than fixed panel systems

K-13 noise reduction insulation is spray applied directly to most substrates: concrete, plasterboard, GRP, steel, glass, expanded polystyrene. Domes, vaults, profiled, corrugated, flat, in fact any shaped substrate can be sprayed with SonaSpray K-13.

Available in a range of standard colours from stock K-13 noise reduction insulation can also be specially manufactured to the client’s colour requirement (minimum quantity applies).

Carbon neutral – Low Embodied Energy – Good for the Environment – Recyclable Safe recycled natural cellulose fibre. Future reconstruction of buildings may require removal of SonaSpray , it can be recycled or disposed of as a non-special waste - your local authority waste disposal will give advice on recycling.

SonaSpray K-13 noise reduction insulation is a total system, with in-built treatment for fire and mould resistance and colouring through the full thickness of the coating. Manufacture is accredited ISO 9001: 2000 Certification.

SonaSpray K-13 Project Examples:

   Royal Observatory, Greenwich

Home of time itself. The Royal Observatory is one of the most important historic scientific sites in the world. Founded by Charles II in 1675 it is known throughout the world as being the official starting point for each new day, year and millennium.

The Royal Observatory has undergone a major £15 million redevelopment which includes new galleries, an education centre and a state-of-the-art planetarium; within this facility the acoustic ambience is fundamental to the success of the venue.

Finding an acoustic product that would take the shape of the dome, appear as black as night and therefore invisible to the audience, would normally have been an ordeal; the problem was solved with through coloured Black SonaSpray K-13 noise reduction insulation from Oscar Acoustic’s range of acoustic decorative finishes.

Arup Acoustics, the projects acoustic consultants carried out an extensive acoustic analysis of the new Planetarium. SonaSpray K-13 noise reduction insulation was then specified at 50mm for the curved concrete walls and 75mm thick for the discoid ceiling, the spray was installed in a single visit of 4 days, spraying to the required thickness in one coat.

Other planetariums using SonaSpray noise reduction insulation:
National Space Centre Planetarium, Leicester.
Bristol Planetarium.

  Saltly Signal Centre

In 2008, Network Rail decided to combine the entire Midlands railway signalling team in one building.

At that time, half of Saltly Signal Centre was lying dormant, as the giant bomb proof concrete dome proved unpopular with employees due to a lack of natural light and high noise reverberation times.

When Network Rail launched plans to re-commission the dome, SonaSpray K-13 noise reduction insulation was specified for application to the feature domed soffit at 50mm. This large area was completed ahead of schedule in just 8 days minimising disruption to Overbury Construction’s already tight program.

The result was an attractive finish with excellent acoustics.

  Bournemouth International Centre

During the refurbishment of The Windsor Hall, improved acoustics was a major requirement. The acoustic consultants specified SonaSpray K-13 noise reduction insulation to be sprayed across the profiled steel soffit at 16mm thick and in black; the ceiling appears to be endless and invisible above the down lights.

Two Oscar Acoustics teams sprayed the complete area in a weekend, working off scissor lifts. This assisted the main contractor ‘Waring Contracts’ to complete the extensive project in budget and on time.

Technical Information

Acoustic DATA:

SonaSpray K-13 can be tailored to meet your specific project acoustic need. There is a choice of finish, you may select texture and colour and acoustic performance. SonaSpray K-13 can be applied at variable thickness and variable areas to provide a designed acoustic ambience. It is spray applied to the full thickness in one application.

Test DATA certified by TNO Technical University Delft NL. Tests were on a solid backing, a panel backing with air space behind the panel will change absorption; normally there is improved absorption at low frequency.

Environmental:

SonaSpray K-13 achieves M1 certification for Building Materials emissions. This is the best possible classification. Click here for certificate.

Thermal DATA:

SonaSpray insulates by creating dead air spaces macroscopically between and within the hollow cellulose fibres. Testing on actual buildings demonstrates that sprayed insulation outperforms fibreglass batts that are mechanically retained. 100mm thick U = 0.32 W/m2K

Mass:

Dry Weight of SonaSpray K-13 per 5mm thickness = 0.36 kg/m2
Dry Weight of SonaSpray K-13 per 25mm thickness = 1.8 kg/m2

Bonding to Substrate:

SonaSpray K-13 noise reduction insulation can be applied to virtually any substrate; some surfaces may need priming to control suction. Old surfaces may need a barrier coating to prevent staining from leaching out contaminants while the surface is wet. Fully cured SonaSpray K-13 will improve strength.

Condensation Control:

For areas such as indoor pools and ice arenas, SonaSpray K-13 noise reduction insulation aids in condensation control. The proper combination of SonaSpray K-13 and ventilation prevents condensation on metal, concrete and other surfaces. SonaSpray K-13 actually reduces ventilation requirements, saving in both the ventilation equipment cost and operating costs.

RH Control:

SonaSpray K-13 noise reduction insulation is a natural humidity moderator. At times of increasing humidity SonaSpray K-13 will absorb large amounts of water vapour. When the humidity drops SonaSpray K-13 will exhale water vapour and maintain a balance. This characteristic promotes a healthy atmosphere.

Durability:

The adhesive used with SonaSpray K-13 noise reduction insulation provides a strong, durable and resilient bond. When fully cured, surface strength of old plaster will typically improve.

Where to use:

SonaSpray K-13 noise reduction insulation can be quickly and effectively applied to any prepared surface and construction configuration. This allows minimum working down time in existing structures with abilities to meet critical deadlines in new construction. SonaSpray K-13 has a coarse surface texture and is suited to large buildings with longer viewing distances; or use close up where a strong texture is required. Other SonaSpray products offer a finer surface texture.

Fire Performance Ratings:

UK Fire test by Warrington Fire Research:
Class 1 to BS476 Part 7
Class 0 to BS476 Part 6

USA – Factory Mutual Standards research corp. approvals: category I, II, III, IV and V:

Category_I

As an interior finish material of low fire hazard [class I building material] over non-combustible surfaces not requiring automatic sprinkler protection in and of itself.

Category_II

As a protective coating to delay the ignition and reduce the surface burn rate of combustible wood and cellulosic fibre building material.

Category_III

As a protective coating to delay the ignition and reduce the surface burn rate of low melting point, combustible cellular plastic building materials and to protect their dimensional stability for a brief period.

Category_IV

As a protective coating for building structural steel to supplement automatic sprinkles protection in preventing structural failure temperatures of the steel in high fire hazard occupancies.

Category_V

As a protective coating to the underside of a Class II insulated steel roof deck construction to sufficiently lower the rate of fuel contribution from the Class II deck components to qualify the construction as Class I so allowing automatic sprinkler protection to be omitted under Factory Mutuals Standards

Maintenance:

SonaSpray K-13 noise reduction insulation can be over-painted or applied with additional coats of SonaSpray. Small areas of damage can be repaired by hand.

If SonaSpray K-13 is disturbed or damaged so that fibre is released into the atmosphere, the resulting contamination is harmless. Maintenance work can be undertaken while the building is occupied. Please refer to COSHH data for detailed product analysis.
