SonaSpray fc

Spray-on acoustic decorative sound absorber

SonaSpray fc is a one coat seamless decorative sound absorber that is spray applied to virtually any clean surface and any shape of surface.  It has a lightly textured, firm finish.

SonaSpray fc will conform to most surface contours.  In addition to flat surfaces it can be applied to: barrel vaults, domes, corrugated decks, pan construction and other complex surfaces.  The high performance adhesive will bond to virtually all common construction materials including plaster, wood, metal and concrete.  Some surfaces, such as water stained ceilings, wood and oxidized metal, will require sealing to prevent migratory staining of the SonaSpray finish.  SonaSpray fc can be installed where panels or stretch fabrics are impossible and even with thin coatings is an excellent sound absorber.

  • Carbon neutral sound absorber
  • Low embodied energy
  • Good for the environment
  • Recyclable

SonaSpray fc is a safe, recycled, natural sound absorbing cellulose fibre

Future reconstruction of buildings may require the removal of SonaSpray sound absorber. It can be recycled or disposed of as a non-special waste and your local authority environmental department will give advice on recycling.

SonaSpray fc Installations

UCL Torrington

UCL Torrington

With its student population increasing rapidly, University College London (UCL) required more space on its campus in Bloomsbury.  Working with the University’s Design Team, Structure Tone helped develop a scheme to refurbish the ground floor and basement and also renovate Level 10 at Torrington Place.

One New Bailey, Manchester

One New Bailey, Manchester

Interiors completed for law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's offices at One New Bailey in Manchester. So far, the firm has placed 450 employees at its Global Centre at One New Bailey and the 64,000 sq ft premises near Manchester's Spinningfields district is the companies first long-term property outside London within the UK.

St. Thomas Church, Hanwell

St. Thomas Church, Hanwell

A recent major refurbishment to this grade II* listed building included improvement to the church acoustics. After research by acoustic consultants - Peninsular Acoustics - an acoustic coating of SonaSpray fc sound absorber in off white was proposed at 25mm thickness to control reflected noise from hard surfaces.

Greenwich Centre Swimming Pool

Greenwich Centre Swimming Pool

SonaSpray fc in white applied to a ceiling surface is an ideal sound absorber and also helps to reduce condensation in the pool area when it is combined with appropriate ventilation. SonaSpray fc will provide the pool with a bright, attractive ceiling for years to come.

University of Leicester

University of Leicester

The large, open plan design of Leicester University’s new Student Union building meant that in order for it to be fit for purpose, i.e. a relaxing space to meet socialise and study, some kind of sound absorber was going to be needed.  Options were limited due to the half glazed and half curved feature sail design of the ceiling.

Wembley Stadium

Wembley Stadium

During 2000, following the repositioning of the main stage at the original Wembley Stadium, concert goers complained to the management about poor stadium acoustics spoiling their enjoyment of the concert.

Echo Problem - Emlyn Hughes House

Echo Problem - Emlyn Hughes House

Emlyn Hughes House is designed to provide drama both from the exterior and interior.  The Gateway Project was intended to represent the history of the town by resembling a submarine, construction of which is the towns primary industry.

BT Groups

BT Groups

When BT Groups, 19th Century Faraday Building in the City of London received a major refurbishment the main contractor was looking for a decorative coating that would refurbish the old existing concrete soffit using a single coat.

Acoustic DATA

SonaSpray fc installations can be tailored to meet your specific project acoustic needs.  There is a choice of finish; you may select texture, colour and acoustic performance.  SonaSpray fc can be applied at variable thicknesses and variable areas to provide designed acoustic ambience.  It is spray applied to the full sound absorber thickness in one application.

SonaSpray fc standard absorption coefficients

8mm 0.07 0.18 0.63 0.78 0.90 1.01 0.60
12mm 0.09 0.22 0.71 0.94 1.02 1.01 0.70
16mm 0.11 0.34 0.85 0.94 1.04 1.04 0.80

Test DATA certified by TNO Technical University Delft NL.  Tests were on a solid backing.  A sound absorbing fc panel substrate with air space behind the panel will change absorption; normally there is improved absorption at low frequency.

SonaSpray fc achieves M1 certification for Building Material emissions.  This is the best possible classification.  Click here for certificate.

Thermal DATA

SonaSpray insulates by creating dead air spaces macroscopically between and within the hollow cellulose fibres.

Dry Weight of SonaSpray fc per 10mm thickness = 1.60 kg/m2

Wet Weight of SonaSpray fc per 10mm thickness = 2.93 kg/m2

Dry Weight of SonaSpray fc per 20mm thickness = 3.20 kg/m2

Wet Weight of SonaSpray fc per 20mm thickness = 5.86 kg/m2

Bonding to Substrate

SonaSpray fc sound absorber can be applied to virtually any substrate.  Some surfaces may need priming to control suction.  Old surfaces may need a barrier coating to prevent staining from leaching out of contaminants whilst the surface is wet.  Fully cured SonaSpray fc will improve strength.

Bond Strength: SonaSpray fc >600 psf ASTM E-736
Compression Strength: SonaSpray fc >400 psf ASTM E-761

The adhesive used with SonaSpray fc sound absorber provides a strong, durable and resilient bond. When fully cured, surface strength of old plaster will typically improve.

Condensation control

For areas such as indoor pools, SonaSpray fc aids in condensation control.  The proper combination of SonaSpray fc and ventilation prevents condensation on metal, concrete and other surfaces.  SonaSpray fc sound absorber actually reduces ventilation requirements, saving in both the ventilation equipment cost and operating costs.

RH control

SonaSpray fc is a natural humidity moderator.  At times of increasing humidity SonaSpray fc will absorb large amounts of water vapour.  When the humidity drops SonaSpray fc will exhale water vapour and maintain a balance.  This characteristic promotes a healthy atmosphere.

Recessed items

Recessed services e.g. spot lighting will require a halo spacer to match the material depth.  Oscar Acoustics manufacture and install stainless steel halo spacers to the same size as the hole cut out.  Stop beads may be required around openings which again we can supply and install.  Specially designed access hatches are also available through Profab, enabling the SonaSpray to continue across the hatch door.  Problems can arrise from using other hatches.  These items are at extra cost and are to be purchased direct from the Profab.  Please contact Oscar Acoustics for details and an item code.  Surface mounted fittings e.g. hanging/pendant lights will require pattresses to match the material depth.  Please contact Oscar Acoustics for further advice.

Where to use

SonaSpray fc sound absorber can be quickly and effectively applied to most prepared surfaces and construction configurations.  This allows minimum working down time in existing structures with abilities to meet critical deadlines in new construction.  SonaSpray fc has a fine surface texture and is suited to ceilings of offices, restaurants, receptions, designer homes, school classrooms, swimming pools etc. in fact it is an excellent sound absorber for any premium indoor space with a noise problem.

Fire performance ratings

UK Fire test by Warrington Fire Research:
Class 1 to BS476 Part 7
Class 0 to BS476 Part 6

European test by Warrington Fire Research:

SonaSpray fc sound absorber can be over-painted or applied with additional coats of SonaSpray.  Small areas of damage can be repaired by hand.  Maintenance of this seamless decorative sound absorbing finish is minimal.

If SonaSpray fc is disturbed or damaged so that fibre is released into the atmosphere, the resulting contamination is harmless.  Maintenance work can be undertaken while the building is occupied.  Please refer to COSHH data for detailed product analysis.
